Dear Boston Area Toy Collectors Club,

After attending your event at the Lantana on Friday September 23, I just wanted to let you know what a great time I had!  I have known about your yearly event for quite a few years now but after attending for the first time all I can say is the evening exceeded my expectations!  The event was well run with beautiful and well put together displays, silent auctions and raffles (of which I was lucky enough to win most of the items I had my eyes on!).  I was pleasantly surprised that EVERYONE was able to win something at the raffles and with the addition of the free gift bags, no one walked away empty handed.  In addition the food and staff at the Lantana were excellent!

I was excited to win the Kotobukia Captain America  and Thor statues as part of your silent auction.  As a Bowen statue/bust collector for over 10 years, I was impressed with the sculpting detail, perfect paint applications and dynamic poses of the Kotobukia statues and as a big Thor fan I must say Koto’s Thor statue is BETTER than the Bowen version!  I also thought the interchangeable head for the Captain America statue was a plus!  I have seen photos of Koto’s upcoming Magneto and classic Avengers statues and will be looking to add those to my collection!

Kotobukiya's Thor and Captain America statues.

I also won the Tonner Doll’s 70th Anniversary Steve Rogers – Super Soldier figure from the silent auction.  While I have seen photos of Tonner product I have never purchased one before.  I was very impressed by the Tonner dolls on display at your event (i.e. Harley Quinn, Lara Croft, Wonder Woman, Black Canary, Catwoman, etc.) with the detailed and comic accurate outfits.  I thought the Tonner 70th Anniversary Steve Rogers – Super Soldier figure was a beautiful tribute to one of Marvel Comics original heroes!

The Tonner Doll Company's Steve Rogers - Super Soldier.

As a collector of mainly Marvel and DC action figures it was great to see the DC Direct display.  I have been collecting DC Direct since 1999 when I acquired their Hard Traveling Heroes Green Lantern, Black Canary and Green Arrow 6” figures.  It was the FIRST time I saw action figures that did NOT look like toys and bought them HOPING they would continue to produce other DC superhero characters of this quality.  Well 12 years and hundreds of figures later, I can say that DC Directs action figure sculpts and paints are top of the industry!   I count myself lucky to have won the RARE Blackest Night Orange Lantern Larfleeze figure with Glomulus.

In closing I’m glad I finally attended  your event and look forward to future attendance!

Best Regards,

Club Member Jim Patterson (Matchbox collector) says:

This event keeps getting better.  The companies stepped it up this year, especially Matchbox/Mattel.  Matchbox sent twenty-eight items for the event. The items included preproduction models and a number of out of production items.  Everybody was very impressed, especially me.

I am the chair person for die-cast/Matchbox for the club and was very impressed.  I identified six I was interested in and, being a truck collector, was really excited.  I thought the Cadillac ambulance would be the one everyone wanted, but it turned out the Unimog was the winner on this night.  The Unimog was one of the ones I wanted, but you can’t get everything.  Each model had “BAC” either on the package or scratched in the model.

I picked up four
:

And was happy, the International Brush Fire truck being one of my favorite castings from the Matchbox/Mattel team. These four cap off my collection for each of these castings for me since I have everyone regular issue and now have the preproduction version as well. these are now sitting in there  right place in my collection next to their brothers. The matchbox display was very well put together,

Club President Steven Lanzilla supplied a very nice glass case that locked, so the models were protected and arranged very nicely. The preproductions were what everyone wanted, but the out of production items held their own as well. The premiere fire trucks on the bottom shelf were hotly contested, a series that matchbox should consider going back to,  I had them already from when they came out.

The preproductions are on the top two and half shelves, and the rest are the bottom one and half shelves.  A very nice mix of stuff.  Our club has some police collectors, fire/ambulance collectors and some matchbox only collectors. The night was very well received.  Both Matchbox and the Tonner Doll company had the highlights and were the most talked about.  The night was rainy and foggy, which was too bad because each year there was some classic cars out front that people could go outside and look at and take a break from the festivities inside.  The dinner as always was delicious and in my opinion was the best food we have had for the event.  A fun night of family, friends and toys a big thanks to Matchbox/Mattel for these awesome contributions, and a big thanks to Steven Lanzilla and the club for putting on another great event!!

Another Matchbox collector heard from (Club Member Douglas Vogel):

My parents actually started my Matchbox collection when I was about four.  Although nothing of that original group survives, I have a number of cars from a second effort started at age six.  My father was a geologist in the oil business from the late 1950’s on and took us to live where ever he worked.  I quickly discovered the greatest thing about Matchbox in the 1960’s was that they could be found at almost any International Airport in the world.  Most good hobby shops and many other retail outlets such as hardware stores and pharmacies handled them too.  My collection began at a cake shop in Manila and has many cars that were bought there and elsewhere in
the Philippines.   Though the bulk of my Matchbox cars were bought here in the USA, my collection includes many toy cars purchased in Stavanger, Paris, London, Casablanca, and Dakar.

Although I have purchased several “Pre pro” paint examples, the first true preproduction model I have is the three axle Dump Truck ( MB536 ) that I won at the September 23,  2011 Boston Area Toy Collector’s Club Event in Randolph, MA.

It is a raw metal trail run with no markings on the base except for the scratched in notation: BAC, identifying that they were donated by Mattel.

The Matchbox pre pro samples were for many club members the highlight of the evening.

Club member Greg Andrews gives his reaction to the event.

Once again Stephen Lanzilla has put together a wonderful evening. One of the highlights of the evening for me was talking to Paul Ryan about the process of making comic book art.  Starting with the line drawing and ending with a full color captioned image.  I had no idea the number of talented individuals involved in what I thought was a simply process.

Once again the attendees were treated to another look at a piece of the vast toy collection of club member Steve Silvia.  This year he brought all types and sizes of female action figures and accessories that tied right in to this year’s theme.

This year’s theme got me looking closely at the female dolls that were on display.  I was drawn to the Tonner Dolls display.  They created a doll of the character Zoe Washburne from the short lived TV series Firefly. I was very impressed with the detail and workmanship that went into creating her.

But even though this years theme was Woman of Action – Powerful and Unique, I couldn’t take my eyes of Tonner Dolls Captain America complete with shield and helmet. I’m strictly a Matchbox collector but this Captain America figure impressed me so much I was thinking of starting to collect action figures. But I don’t have enough room to store my Matchbox collection let alone another line of toys. Someday I’ll have to ask Steve Silvia how he does it.

The silent actions for me were one of the highlights of the evening.  As a Matchbox collector I’m always on the lookout to add some Matchbox items to my collection.  Last year there were a few awesome models I wanted to add to my collection but I was outbid.  So this year I came prepared, which basically means I came with more money than I did last year. I had saved up all year for this one night.  I was not going to be denied.

Through the hard work of Steve and Beverly Lanzilla, Matchbox came through with some pre-production as well as out of production models. I’ve never owned a Matchbox pre-production model in my life.  They have always been priced well outside my price range so I have never considered adding them to my collection, until this event.

The bidding for all the Matchbox models was fast and furious and it went right down to the wire. I was lucky enough to have won the following pre-production and out of production models.

                           CY041A - Peterbilt Conventional Sleeper Lowboy Transporter – 1997

These are the first four pre-production models in my collection.  I haven’t decided if I am going to add anymore but for right now I am enjoying showing these four off to family and friends.  The Peterbilt is not a pre-production model it was issued in 1997 as part of the Premiere Collectibles line. It is great looking truck with real rubber tires.

Once again I had a great time at this years event.  I can’t wait until next year.

Greg

The model is the Chrome Ford Consul manufactured by CORGI of Great Britain.  This is the special chrome version of the first car CORGI ever manufactured in 1956 and was originally commissioned by the CORGI Collector Club UK in 2006 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of CORGI. That edition sold for approximately $50 each in 2006.  This 1/46 scale car is approximately 4 inches in length and comes individually boxed.  This LIMITED MEMENTO EDITION has the Boston Area Toy Collectors Club logo on the roof and the banner of our 10th Annual National Collectible Toy Event on both sides.  Only one hundred (100) of this edition have been made.

Special thanks to Susan Pownall, Editor of the CORGI Collector magazine, who personally selected the model and commissioned the custom artwork proudly displayed on it, to commemorate 10 years of the BATCC celebrating CORGI with our National Toy Event.  The stunning artwork was created and applied to the models by Code3Models in Swansea, Wales UK, the original home of CORGI.
